I propose the notion that there are various processes of widely differing degrees of complexity which distort the original percept. Projection, in the new sense in which I use it, refers to the most extreme distortion of reality only; and the definition offered above applies to it. Not only is it a largely unconscious process, but it also cannot be made conscious except when brought into awareness through prolonged psychotherapy. We may also speak of sensitization and autistic perception as types of less complex apperceptive distortions, which do not need to be examined in detail here. I reserve the term "externalization" for those apperceptive processes which function on a preconscious level and can therefor readily be made conscious. Externalization is a phenomenon that characterizes many of the responses to the TAT; for example, a subject at the time of inquiry often recognizes at least partially that he was speaking of himself in the stories recently told, although he reports that he was unaware of this fact while he told the stories.

We may presume that much preconscious material of this kind also has unconscious determinants. Psychological determinism is another assumption that is absolutely essential to the interpretation of TAT productions. The hypothesis of psychological determinism is regarded as a special case of the law of causality; namely, that everything said or written as a response to some stimulus situation, like all other psychological productions, has a dynamic cause and meaning. The principle of overdetermination must be taken into account in this context since it insists that each part of the projected material may have more than one meaning, corresponding to dif-ferent levels of personality organization.

It is useful to recall, byway of example, that a story may be taken quite consciously from a movie recently seen and yet may be reported only because it reflects an important conflict of the subject on a preconscious level and also because it may, at the same time, have significant symbolic meaning on an unconscious level. In a like manner a given act may have several different unconscious meanings, each of them valid in relation to the whole personality.

Startling as this principle may appear at first to behaviorists, it must be pointed out that it holds in the physical sciences also. In physics, for instance, the flight of an object through the atmosphere is the resultant of a number of factors such as its size, weight, and shape and the wind velocity. In our present language, its final path is overdetermined. And in a quite similar manner a psychological act is the resultant of a number of different psychological processes. Saying that a psychological event may have several meanings simply indicates that it may be viewed as causally related to a number of different factors. The subject may either be seated in a chair or lie on a couch. Usually it is desirable to have the test administrator seated behind the subject. It cannot be emphasized enough that the position should be behind and to the side of the subject in either case so that he cannot see the examiner but so that the examiner may have full view of the patient's facial expressions.

This position may have to be modified with suspicious and otherwise disturbed patients and children. The instructions for administration of the TAT are those which are applicable only in a clinical setting, and they are purposely less formal than some have advocated. It is clear that these procedures would not prove useful in research work, in which more rigorous rules would have to be laid down and carefully followed. The subject may be given the instruction in an informal statement such as: "I am going to show you some pictures, and I should like you to tell me stories about what is going on in each picture, what led up to it, and what the outcome will be. I want you to make it lively and full of drama and to let yourself go freely.

It is entirely permissible to make some encouraging remark to the patient after the first story. Whenever necessary, one is entitled to remind the subject that what we want is a story about what goes on, what leads up to it, and what the outcome will be. It is economical in many cases to give the selected cards to the subject with written or oral instructions, emphasizing that he should look at only one picture at a time, and then to let him write the stories on plain paper in the office or at home or even as a member of the group to which the TAT pictures may possibly be shown on a screen. It is helpful to let the subject know that he is expected to write about three hundred words per story as spontaneously as possible.

The following instructions may be typed on the front inside cover of the set that is given to the subject for self-administration. Please write a story about each picture in this folder. Do not look at the pictures before you are ready to write. Look at one picture at a time only, in the order given, and write a story about what is going on in the picture, what led up to it, and what the outcome will be. Let yourself go freely, putting down things spontaneously as soon as they come to your mind and without any regard for literary beauty. Be dramatic as though you were writing a script for a movie. It should not be necessary to spend more than about seven minutes per story, although you may spend more time if you wish. Write about words per story, or about one typingpaper page if you write in longhand. If at all possible, please type the longhand story later, without changes, in duplicate, double spaced, one story per page.

Please number the stories as you go along, and then put your name on the front sheet. The obvious advantage of this time-saving procedure is somewhat offset by such disadvantages as a possible loss of spontaneity by the subject, the inability to control the length of the stories, and the lack of opportunity to intervene if the subject begins to show lack of co-operation in responding. Nevertheless, in psychiatric and psychological office practice, the self-administration method has proved quite satisfactory. Again, for practical reasons it has become more and more the custom to give only ten or twelve pictures.

These may be either the first ten or preferably such a selection as may seem most indicated, most likely to illuminate the details of presumably existent problems of the patient. A discussion of the special usefulness of each picture and the special features of personality it is likely to bring out is offered below. An inquiry into the stories after they are completed is most helpful. It is particularly useful after one has had some experience in interpretation and knows what to ask for. As a routine, one would inquire for free associations or thoughts concerning all places, dates, proper names of persons, and any other specific or unusual information given by the subject. It is this fact that allows nearly anyone to design a test and to be able to demonstrate some usefulness for it.

One could ask subjects to stand on their heads and base fairly good judgments upon their reaction to and the execution of this request. Similarly nearly any test can be analyzed for a great many different aspects, and since each dimension is by necessity a function of the testee's personality, one is bound to have some results. The crux of the matter, of course, is to have such tests as combine maximum usefulness with maximum validity, reliability, and economy. By the same token, we need those analytical variables or scoring categories which will offer the most information with the least effort. The TAT has been interpreted in many ways. The simplest procedure is the inspection technique. Frequently it is helpful simply to read through the stories, treating them as meaningful psychological communications; one simply underlines anything that seems significant, specific, or unique.

When an experienced examiner rereads the stories a second time, he can, almost without effort, find a repetitive pattern running through them, or he can find facts of different stories falling together into a meaningful whole. This method becomes easier the more experience one has with the TAT or the more clinical, particularly psychoanalytical, experience one has.

In psychiatric practice, as pointed out in one paper [p] it may be particularly helpful to have the patient hold one carbon copy of the TAT stories while the psychotherapist has another one, and then have the patient free-associate generally to the stories and make his own attempts at interpretation. As a frame of reference for the method of interpretation for TAT protocols which I advocate, I review briefly characteristics of the major methods of interpretation which other workers have recommended. It is essential, for full information, that the reader consult the original sources in each instance for the complete system of interpretation that has been developed. The original technique used by Murray and his co-workers depended on an analysis of the stories by the Need-Press Method.

While it is best to consult Murray's book [48] on the details of the need-press concept, it may suffice here to say that every sentence was analyzed as to the needs of the hero and the environmental forces press he is exposed to. To choose a very simple example, he the hero loves her, but she hates him: need for love met by press hate. Every story was so analyzed according to all needs and press, and each need and press received a weighted score. A rank-order system of the needs and press could then be tabulated. At the same time the hierarchical relationships of the needs to each other was investigated, with such concepts of Murray's as needconflict, need-subsidiation, and need-fusion, which are described below.

One of nearly a dozen possible schemes of categories, as developed by Murray and Bellak in at the Harvard Psychological Clinic, is here reproduced Figure 3. A test manual [11] and a guide to the interpretation were designed and were based on an earlier one by Sanford and White [65]. The On and Op in the blank refer to "Object needs" and "Object press," such needs and press as were ascribed not to the hero himself, but to another figure, who was presumably a second identification figure for the storyteller, but farther removed. Aside from a page for the recording of the quantitative need-press data there was also a page for the recording of more molar qualitative data, not unlike some of the categories described in the recommendations for interpretation that are indicated below.

The need-press scheme of interpretation still has many advantages for use in experiments in which detail is most important and time is no object. The method has not become at all popular clinically, however, since it is not easy to master the need concept, and it takes four to five hours on the average for twenty stories. Therefore a great number of attempts to interpret the TAT have sprung up.

Wyatt [85] in an excellent review of the scoring and analysis of the TAT speaks specifically of Rapaport's, Henry's, Rotter's, Tomkins's, and his own method, aside from the need-press analysis. Rotter's suggestions for the interpretation of the TAT are presented in three steps, of which the first refers to eleven aspects of responses to be utilized for interpretation. These are as follows:I. Autobiographical quality, coherence, predominant mood, handling of sex; endings and their relationship to the story, repetition of themes, unusual wording, attitude toward the world, characteristics of central figure, typical methods of solving problems, characters that can be identified with mother, father, son, etc. In the second step five principles of interpretation are proposed: frequency of occurrence of an idea, unusualness regarding plot, language, misrecognitions , determination of identification, determination of cliches, selecting alternate interpretations decision between two possible interpretations.

Clarisa Cue The Thematic Apperception Test in Clinical UseLeopold Bellak THE Thematic Apperception Test, hereafter referred to as the TAT, is a technique for the investigation of the dynamics of personality as it manifests itself in interpersonal relations and in the apperception or meaningful interpretation of the environment. It consists, in its present form, of a series of thirty-one pictures. Testees are asked to tell stories about some of these pictures, thereby presumably revealing their personal, individual apperception of purposely ambiguous stimuli. Tomkins [80] shows that there were earlier attempts by psychologists and psychiatrists to elicit meaningful responses of subjects to pictures. Here belong workers like Brittain [18] who published such an attempt in , Libby [40] who used such a procedure, like Brittain, with children in , and finally Schwartz [72] who used his Social Situation Test in None of these forerunners, however, has attained the popularity of the TAT, which at present ranks with the Rorschach Test.

The TAT and the Rorschach can hardly be considered competitive or mutually exclusive techniques. The Rorschach Test is invaluable as a formal, perceptanalytic technique; it reveals better than any other tests available the formal, expressive nature. By this token, it reveals patterns that are more or less typical for certain psychiatric disease entities or disease processes. The content analysis of the Rorschach Test, even though it has its natural limitations, has not been utilized to the extent it deserves in the majority of present methods of interpretation. It gives primarily, and more so than any other test in use at present, the actual dynamics of interpersonal relationships. By the very nature of the pictures it gives basic data on the testee's relationship to male or female authority figures, to contemporaries of both sexes, and frequently it shows the genesis in terms of family relations. It may not so clearly indicate the intensity of fears as does the Rorschach, but it tells one the nature of them-fear of lack of support or fear of attack by males in specific situations-and it shows the hierarchy of needs and the structure of the compromises between id, ego, and superego.
