I propose the notion that there are various processes of widely differing degrees of complexity which distort the original percept. Projection, in the new sense in which I use it, refers to the most extreme distortion of reality only; and the definition offered above applies to it. Not only is it a largely unconscious process, but it also cannot be made conscious except when brought into awareness through prolonged psychotherapy. We may also speak of sensitization and autistic perception as types of less complex apperceptive distortions, which do not need to be examined in detail here. I reserve the term "externalization" for those apperceptive processes which function on a preconscious level and can therefor readily be made conscious.
